It was kismet to connect with TorchStone just when I was looking to transition from clinical psychology to risk mitigation. Demographically, the two industries couldn’t be more different. One might say that I stood out in the risk mitigation world. Early on in my new role, I attended a meeting at the State Department, and people kept coming up and thanking me. They were using me as a marker to find their friends as I was a young woman in a maroon suit in a sea of mostly men in black, gray, and navy. I recall the lighthearted banter from my team who were all in monochrome. Yet in that moment, despite being aware of our differences, I felt a strong sense of belonging with my team. Those little moments perfectly encapsulate what I have come to know about TorchStone over time. TorchStone is a company that recognizes the value and strength in diversity and the importance of fostering an inclusive and supportive culture. Not only does TorchStone respect my perspective and voice as a young, LGBTQ+, mixed-race female psychologist—they elevate it. When I first joined TorchStone as a Protective Intelligence intern while completing my undergraduate degree at Mercyhurst University, I expected to gain relevant industry experience and expand my knowledge and professional capabilities. What I did not expect was just how impactful the internship would be in shaping the trajectory of my new career. I quickly understood how TorchStone established itself as a leader in the private security industry. Each team member’s unique background and expertise complements other team members’ roles and allows TorchStone to deliver comprehensive security solutions. Whether a seasoned veteran or an intern, each member is considered an integral component to the company’s success. In my role as an intern, I was provided the necessary scaffolding and professional development opportunities to be set up for success in contributing to our company’s deliverables, business development, and generating new and creative solutions to meet client needs. Most importantly, I felt supported by team members who invested their time and efforts to help me grow as a young analyst. After the conclusion of my internship, I was thrilled to join TorchStone as a full-time employee and remain a part of this phenomenal team of highly qualified professionals and all-around good people. As a colleague once said, “Everyone has to start somewhere,” and I am grateful my start is with TorchStone.
