December EP Report Trends

December Venue of EP Incidents by Target

  • The Dec 4 murder of United HealthCare CEO, Brian Thompson, will have long-term implications for corporate security professionals. TorchStone is monitoring public sentiment surrounding the murder of the UHC CEO and his suspected killer and working with clients to assess the threat executives face in all industries.
While the murder itself highlighted the importance of close protection for corporate executives, the public response in support of the murder is a concerning trend for executives in all industries, around the world. There has been an outpouring of support for the suspect behind the murder, with crowds gathering outside his court appearances in New York calling for his release. In the week following the murder, there were multiple incidents of vandalism and communicated threats repeating the suspected killer’s grievances and calling for the death of more executives. There may have even been a copycat attack in Michigan when an employee brought a knife to work and stabbed the president of his company. The executive is expected to survive. However, the overall negative sentiment towards corporate executives and calls for violence against them creates a very dangerous environment that could lead to more attacks in the coming months.
  • U.S. Capitol Police Chief, Thomas Manger, told Congress that his department was aware of at least 50 swatting attacks against members of Congress over the month-long period of November 11-December 11. One of the swatting attacks led to the death of a driver: as a police officer was responding to a call for an emergency at the home of U.S. Rep Marjory Taylor Greene (R-GA), the patrol vehicle collided with another car, killing the driver. At least ten Democratic lawmakers from Connecticut to Maine also reported being targeted by swatting calls and fake bomb threats in the weeks surrounding the Thanksgiving Holiday. And there are signs that political anger is metastasizing from harassment to attacks: on December 10, Capitol Police arrested a man after he assaulted U.S. Rep Nancy Mace (R-SC) near her office on Capitol Hill. Politically motivated threats and violence are continuing well after the elections in November.
