June 2025 EP Report Trends

June 2025 Venue of EP Incidents by Target

  • The lethal attacks on Minnesota state lawmakers on June 14 highlighted the threat to state and regional lawmakers. As federal law enforcement agencies scramble to address the rising threat to members of Congress, it is possible that by making federal lawmakers harder targets, assailants may shift their efforts to less well-protected state and regional lawmakers. There have been 30 documented threats against state and regional leaders so far this year, up from 26 over the same period in 2024. February and June 2025 both saw 9 incidents, which is twice the average number of monthly incidents in 2024. June was also the second month this year when state or regional leaders were the most targeted of the three government categories (the other two being federal/national and local).
  • The trend of burglarizing celebrities’ homes arrived in the Seattle, WA area in 2025. In early June, police arrested and charged a man linked to at least four home burglaries targeting Seattle Mariners baseball players and other athletes since February 2025. The four robberies netted hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of personal belongings. In another case, burglars robbed the home of Seattle area musician, Macklemore, while he was at a publicly announced event in Europe.
  • There were two more high-profile incidents of sports gamblers threatening and harassing athletes this month. First, three-time Olympic gold sprinter Gabby Thomas complained that a man followed her around a competition in Philadelphia, harassing her. He later claimed on social media that his harassment contributed to her loss and his winnings. Later in the month, British Tennis player Katie Boulter revealed that she and her family have received death threats from likely sports gamblers. According to a survey from the Women’s Tennis Association and International Tennis Federation, sports gamblers are responsible for 40% of the abuse reported against athletes.
